Everything You Need to Know About Crushed Concrete

What begins as a loose spread becomes a denser base as Crushed Concrete is compacted. Its angular recycled concrete fragments resist shifting by locking together, and the fines settle into the spaces around them. That makes it a practical underlying layer for driveways, paver patios, and traffic-bearing pads rather than a finish material selected for appearance.
Ground conditions can change from the sandy coastal plain and Pine Barrens to rock and glacial till near the Highlands. Start with a stable prepared subgrade, then place and compact the material in successive layers with light moisture as needed. This gives the base a chance to bind before the finished surface is added. For French drains, pipe bedding, or any clean stone bed, select a washed, open-graded stone instead.

Common Uses
Driveway & Parking Pad Base
For a new driveway or a rebuilt parking pad, crushed concrete can be installed as the supporting layer. Work it in lifts and compact each one to build a load-supporting base that helps reduce potholes and ruts. Leave it exposed for the driving surface, or add driveway gravel above it for a neater appearance.
Road Base & Access Roads
Crushed concrete can be placed beneath private roads, farm lanes, equipment areas and construction entrances. It supports trucks and machinery while providing a passable surface in wet conditions after rain.
Sub-Base for Patios, Walkways & Pads
Place compacted crushed concrete beneath pavers, paths, shed foundations, and hot-tub pads to distribute weight and help keep the finished surface even. Compared with native clay, its coarse aggregate allows more water to pass through, limiting water beneath the surface. Add sand or screenings as the bedding layer before setting pavers.
Fill & Backfill
For low areas, grade buildup, retaining-wall backfill, and footing backfill, crushed concrete can be used as economical structural fill. Its angular aggregate packs into a firm mass that is less likely than soil fill to wash away or become muddy.
Why Choose Crushed Concrete
Comparing Base Costs
Crushed concrete is recycled from existing material, which can make its per-ton cost lower than crushed stone base. Cost differences can matter more when a project includes a long driveway or access route.
Compacts Hard and Stays Put
Under compaction from a roller or plate compactor, the angular aggregate and fines interlock. As it settles, the existing cement paste helps the material bind, creating a dense layer that helps resist shifting, ruts, and washouts.
Recycled and Responsible
Crushed concrete puts demolished concrete back into use and reduces demand for newly quarried stone. It provides the needed support beneath driveways and roads.
Uses for Base and Fill
Use crushed concrete beneath driveways, parking areas, access routes, patios, and sheds, or as general fill. It can cover several early-stage site needs in one delivery.
