If you are laying a garden path, resetting a walkway or rebuilding a side yard, gravel and aggregate delivery in Elizabeth, NJ starts with the right fines and screenings. New Jersey Rock Supply stocks quarry process for the compacted base and stone dust for the setting bed. Around the Meadowlands and Newark Bay, much of the ground is former tidal marsh and fill, so a path built straight on soil moves within a season.

Here is what a path order actually takes, from the base down to the surface.

Materials for Elizabeth Projects

Most path failures come from the base, not the surface. Build a compacted base first, then bed the pavers or set the gravel, then finish with a material that drains and stays put under a wheelbarrow or a foot.

Start with QP (Quarry Process). Quarry process, also called qp, 3/4 inch qp or dga, is a blend of 3/4 inch stone down to stone dust. It compacts hard and binds, which is why it is the standard New Jersey base under paths, driveways, parking pads and shed bases. For a walkway, a solid compacted layer built in lifts is a working starting point.

Over that base, Stone Dust is the usual setting bed. Stone dust, also called screenings or grit, packs into a firm surface for paths and gives pavers and flagstone a bed that holds its grade. Keep the bed even and screed it before you set anything.

For a gravel path rather than a paver one, Walkway Gravel gives you a finer, walkable surface that knits together. Natural Pea Gravel, usually 3/8 inch, suits patio borders and play areas but stays loose underfoot, so it works best at the edges of a path rather than the running surface.

Where a path meets a downspout or a low spot, add drainage underneath. #57 Stone is washed 3/4 inch stone, often sold here as clean stone, and it moves water fast in French drains and behind retaining walls. Drain Rock covers the same ground for foundation drains and drywells.

Two more that come up on path jobs: Top Soil to bring the beds beside the path back to grade, and Shredded Mulch to hold moisture in the plantings through summer.

Ground and Conditions in Elizabeth

Walkways in Elizabeth most often fail because the base under them is too thin. Put a thin layer of quarry process under a walkway and it pumps, shifts and sinks at the first wet winter. A lasting walkway needs more base and good compaction: a solid layer of QP, laid in lifts and compacted while it is still damp.

The ground under Elizabeth makes that worse in places. Red shale and sandstone bedrock sits under basalt and diabase ridges, and much of it is covered by compact glacial till, sand and gravel, or silt and clay left by old glacial lakes. Till and clay-rich old lake beds shed water quickly instead of soaking it in, so runoff has to go somewhere. On a path, that means a drainage layer or a slope away from the base, not a flat grade.

Freeze-thaw is real every winter, though a little milder than in the northwest hills, and storms here often fall near the line between snow and rain. Frost depth is 3 ft under the NJ residential code, so footings and edge restraints need to sit below that line. Base, driveway and paver work runs from spring into late fall, because frozen or saturated ground slows compaction in mid-winter and after big storms.

Delivery to Elizabeth and the Surrounding Area

Order online and pick the material by the ton or by the cubic yard. Bulk material is sold by weight, so tons are the safer number when you know the compacted depth and area you need. Yards are easier when you are matching a bed or a border to a volume you can already picture.

To estimate quantity, multiply length by width by depth in feet, then convert. Measure the length, width and depth of the path, then use the calculator to see how much quarry process it takes before compaction. Order a little over, since QP settles as it is worked in.

New Jersey Rock Supply delivers bulk loads across Elizabeth and Union County, including Plainfield, Linden, Westfield, Rahway and Scotch Plains. Have the drop spot clear of parked cars and low wires, and tell us whether the load goes on the driveway or the lawn. A tarp or drop cloth under the pile saves cleanup later.

Get Your Path Order Started

Run your path length, width and depth through the quantity calculator before you order, and let it convert the volume to tons for you. That number is what we load against. When you are ready, place the order online and we will schedule bulk delivery to your Elizabeth site.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about gravel and aggregate delivery in Elizabeth, NJ

What should I have ready when the truck arrives?

Clear the drop area and make sure nothing is parked where the truck needs to swing in. Mark the spot where you want the pile with a couple of stakes or a can of paint. Decide ahead whether the load goes on the driveway or the lawn, and put a tarp down if you want the ground underneath back clean. If the approach is tight, say so when you order.

What is the best base under pavers in Elizabeth?

Quarry process, also called QP or dga. It is a blend of 3/4 inch stone down to stone dust that compacts hard and binds, which is what a paver base has to do on the compact till and old lake-bed clay found across this part of Union County. Lay it in lifts, compact each one while damp, then bed the pavers in a thin layer of stone dust.

What happens if the weather turns?

We would rather move a delivery than tear up your ground. If the site is too wet for the truck on the day, we will call you and rebook. Tell us in advance about any part of the approach that does not drain and we will plan around it.
